She brought the last victory for Germany from the Eurovision Song Contest, is considered a style and advertising icon and has been winning prizes regularly for over ten years. Now Lena Meyer-Landrut turns 31.
When the 66th Eurovision Song Contest was held in Turin in mid-May and Germany came in a pitiful last place, memories of 2010 came back to life. Germany celebrated a young woman bringing home the prestigious win. Lena Meyer-Landrut turns 31 today.
First appearances on television
Lena Johanna Therese Meyer-Landrut was born in Hanover in 1991 and was raised by her mother alone for most of her childhood.
She gained her first experience with film and television through short appearances in pseudo-documents and court shows such as “K11 Commissioners in Action” or “Judge Alexander Hold”.
In 2010, she prevailed against 4,500 competitors in the casting show “Unser Star für Oslo”, which was specially produced to enable Germany to achieve the best placement in the Eurovision Song Contest. With the help of entertainer Stefan Raab and the song “Satellite”, the Hanoverian entered the race. In the end, she clearly won with 246 votes.
Prominent overnight
The singer became a folk hero practically overnight, with more than 20 million people watching her performance in Oslo. The following day she was allowed to sign the city of Hanover’s Golden Book, was celebrated by around 40,000 fans and got her first recording contract with Universal Music.
The winning song and at the same time their first single “Satellite” broke all music records in Germany. In the first three days there were over 120,000 downloads in Germany. The first album, «My Cassette Player», was just as successful. It was at the top of the German charts for 44 weeks. Three of the first five songs in the German charts came from the young interpreter.
Awards and image change
She was aware that the young Lena would not be permanently successful with her cheeky and youthful image, which is why she constantly changed in the course of her career. Just one year after her victory in Oslo, she tried to confirm her performance. At the ESC 2011 in Düsseldorf, she came in tenth. With “Taken By A Stranger” she tried to showcase her wicked side.
Her second album “Good News” was able to build on the success of her first album. Her other albums could not quite reach the earlier chart positions, but she collected awards regularly. She was able to collect several prizes, such as the Echo, the Comet or the 1 live crown. In the meantime, Lena Meyer-Landrut has grown up, is a successful musician with five published albums and a welcome face on German TV shows.
The pop singer has been married to singer Mark Forster since December 2020. The couple have one child together.
