Canadian Actress: Cobie Smulders in series on Clinton Affair Commentator

My colleague Betty Gilpin had scheduling problems – now Cobie Smulders has stepped in and plays in the TV format “American Crime Story”.

The Canadian actress Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”, “Avengers”) is said to play the American right-wing conservative commentator Ann Coulter (59) in the TV miniseries “Impeachment: American Crime Story”.

The 39-year-old replaces her colleague Betty Gilpin (35, “Glow”), who was originally planned for the role of Coulters, as reported by several US media. According to the industry magazine “Deadline”, Gilpin had to resign from production due to scheduling problems.

The third season of the award-winning TV format “American Crime Story” is to be seen from September 7th. The US cable broadcaster FX Networks published a trailer for the miniseries on Wednesday, which sheds light on the failed impeachment proceedings against former US President Bill Clinton. Ann Coulter had landed a bestseller in the late 1990s with a book listing arguments for Clinton’s impeachment.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” deals with the sensational Clinton affair over 20 years ago with Monica Lewinsky, the former intern at the White House. Lewinsky is on board as a producer for the series. Her character is played by the US actress Beanie Feldstein (28, “Lady Bird”), the British actor Clive Owen (56, “King Arthur”) slips into the role of a former president.

Clinton had to face impeachment proceedings in 1999 because of a lie about his relationship with Lewinsky. However, the US Senate acquitted him of allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. The season is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.
