Lenny Kravitz’ most famous songs like “Fly Away” or “I’ll Be Waiting” have long had cult status. This summer the multi-instrumentalist is showing his photographs in an exhibition in Vienna. The rock star turns 58 today.
Hardly any other musician let off steam in the realm of rock as much as Lenny Kravitz. In his work, the Brooklyn-born singer and songwriter moved from one genre to the next – from funk to hard and pop rock, from soul to reggae or even psychedelic music influences. The rock star has used a tremendous range of genres in his more than 30-year career.
In the video for his song “Low”, released in 2018, you can see the musician sitting barefoot on the drums – lending his voice to the complex rhythm of the song. Kravitz, who started out making music under the pseudonym Romeo Blue, is a gifted multi-instrumentalist and records his songs himself in the recording studio. This was also captured on film in the music video for “I’ll Be Waiting”, which shows the all-rounder not only conducting the microphone, guitar or drums, but also conducting a string orchestra.
But Kravitz is also bustling about in other artistic realms: the Hotel Jaz in the City in Vienna is showing an exhibition of photos by him and the photographer Mathieu Bitton, who also directed the music video for “Low”, until June 30th.
The images show the rock star’s view of the outside world as a public figure. The subjects of the works are fans, reporters and photographers – from the perspective of the musician himself. «By pointing the lens at them, I indirectly took a deeper look at myself and the surreal world in which I move in public» .
Today, the all-round talent lives in Paris, among other places. His daughter Zoë Kravitz is a successful actress and model. Most recently, the 33-year-old was in front of the camera as Catwoman alongside Robert Pattinson in the film “The Batman”.
