“At home the booth was often full, my friends liked to visit me,” continues Özdemir. The children were allowed to watch TV there “until our eyes became square,” which the neighbors rarely allowed. After working in a paper mill, his mother always brought sweets and distributed them.
She couldn’t understand when other parents withheld TV and sweets from their children. Özdemir explains: “My mother thought this shortage was a sign of poverty and thought that if the neighboring families cannot afford sweets and TVs, then I have to take care of it, as it should be for good neighbors.”
Bad Urach was her “second home”
Nihal Özdemir was an “impressive and courageous woman”. “If I have learned anything about love, humanity and humility, then I owe it to my parents and their conviction that you can be a patriot without being a nationalist,” the politician continues.
His father Abdullah died in 2015. In Cem Özdemir’s birthplace Bad Urach, his mother “fell asleep peacefully in her bed and didn’t wake up the way she wished”. She came there from Istanbul and found “together with my father her second home”. Özdemir’s mother “experienced and went through a lot, time has torn her but also given her a lot. For this path in life I have erected a memorial for her in my heart, to which I not only bow today.”
