“Twice as awesome as before”

“Twice as awesome as before”

His parents, especially his guitar-playing father, sparked Fabian Jungreithmayr’s love of music. How they managed to ignite such a strong fire for an active life in the 34-year-old Innviertler that he is still bursting with energy after tough years of the pandemic, what’s going on? research them separately. It would be worthwhile.

Jungreithmayr has been the bassist for the band LaBrassBanda since 2014, which is a guest at the o.heimArt Festival presented by OÖN (more on the right). If you don’t know the Bavarian combo: the troupe around singer, trumpeter and Bruckner University graduate Stefan Dettl becomes a “roller” on stage, drawing its power from a mix of brass and world music that gets your heart pumping. Jungreithmayr corresponds to this.

A broken arm as a stroke of luck

“Whatever you want,” he’ll answer it, he greets what’s up? to the interview. How he got hired by LaBrassBanda in the first place would be good to know. “It’s a funny, long story,” says the man from Ried im Innkreis, and relates: It was around 2008/2009. LaBrassBanda had a show to play in Würzburg, only the opening band’s guitarist was suffering from a broken arm. “I stepped in as a substitute.”

Jungreithmayr met LaBrassBanda boss Stefan Dettl, with whom he now enjoys sitting in the beer garden as a colleague and friend. At the time, Dettl was working on a solo project, “and played a little guitar himself. He said to me: I’m not that good at it anyway, just play with me.” Rieder was engaged. “Later he brought me to LaBrassBanda.”

“I am made of energy”

Things are now looking good for the concert summer of 2022. “We’re incredibly motivated and we’re really looking forward to playing again.” The first performances have already been completed. “It may be that we’re a bit over-motivated at the moment and have a bit of energy,” he says, laughing. “I think you noticed that at the first shows.” Have you “touched” something too much? “Well, full karacho, full program.” He laughs louder.

Even in the most difficult Corona hours, the feeling never crept in that LaBrassBanda could fall apart or even be given up. “We knew: Now we have to go through it, but afterwards it’s twice as bad as before”.

But how does a musician of string instruments, whose first instrument at the age of six was the violin at the Ried State Music School, connect with a band whose musical heritage is brass sounds?

“That’s a good question.” Jungreithmayr thinks about it. “I used to have a funk band with which we played cover numbers. Our horns used to listen to a lot of Youngblood Brass Band”. The North Americans, which combine hip-hop, funk and jazz, liked it. “Then they said that there is now a band of this kind from Bavaria: LaBrassBanda. That’s how I got to know and appreciate this music.” And not long later its founder Dettl.

Jungreithmayr remained “loyal” to his state music school until he was 18 years old. He switched from the violin to the guitar, then the Innviertler graduated from the Bruckner University. Letting off steam on stage has always been his thing. “I’m built of energy.” This also wanted to be dismantled during the cultural standstill. “Just saying I’m sitting around comfortably wouldn’t have worked.”

How does he deal with his energy level before the performance? “I make sure that I’m at the highest level that I can give. Half an hour before the show, he puts on the bass, plays in, is provided with stage technology. “As soon as I’m on stage, I switch . Then it all goes there.” The exciting constant remains the audience. It’s different everywhere. The “home game” in Ottensheim, however, is a special highlight. “To deliver fully is of course mandatory.”
