Roger Federer has been a professional tennis player for more than 20 years. Because of his knee problems, however, he had to take longer breaks recently.
He would have loved to go to Tokyo for the Olympics, but his ongoing knee problems thwarted his plans.
“I am very disappointed, because it was always an honor and a highlight of my career when I represented Switzerland,” he wrote on social networks.
For Federer it would have been the fifth participation in the Olympics. In 2004 in Athens he lost early, in 2008 in Beijing he won gold in doubles alongside Stan Wawrinka. In 2012 in London he won silver in the singles. In 2016, he could not travel to the rings spectacle in Rio because he had previously canceled the season due to knee problems.
At its premiere in Sydney in 2000, he narrowly missed a medal, but then met his future wife Mirka in Australia, with whom he now has four children.
Federer was the flag bearer of the Swiss Olympic team twice (2004 and 2008). Olympic individual gold is now denied to him. Today, on the day of the closing ceremony, the tennis star will be 40 years old. There will be melancholy, but there is still no talk of an end to his career.
