Evelyn Grill likes to let go at work, to be surprised by what comes out at the end of the creative process. The artist, who grew up in St. Valentin and now lives in Vienna, keeps going back to what she once learned at the Linz Art University, among other things: screen printing and the art of tailoring.
With these skills, the 48-year-old has made it to textile designer at Swarovski in Wattens, solo dresser at the Bregenz Festival and – with screen-printed motifs from The Magic Flute – to the Vienna Opera Ball. Now she is exhibiting her “World Views” in the Angerlehner Museum in Thalheim until September 25th. The title of the show is self-explanatory: “Everyone can form their own opinion when looking at it.” Whereby at the beginning of a creative process there is always the color – preferably red and turquoise. What happens in between is pure intuition, says the artist.
Nevertheless, Evelyn Grill’s works always give the viewer a real image, a kind of intuitive guide to interpretation. In the work “Überfallen” (see right) this can be a romantic sunset over a city, but also a river flowing by or a burning city.
Evelyn Grill’s oeuvre, with its colorful screen prints, is also technically unique. During the year-long preparations for this winning exhibition, she expanded her oeuvre with a craft that brought her back to her roots: sewing.
She gives free rein to her creativity with machine and thread. This creates involuntary color companions, map-like frames that give the color motifs previously “squeegeed” (applied, note) with a spatula an additional hold. With the exhibition “World Images” (curator Elisabeth Peterlik), Evelyn Grill has masterfully succeeded in combining craftsmanship with very subjective visual art.
