You have to be very good if you can establish your own celebration tradition at the Cannes Film Festival: The Swede Ruben Östlund, who won his second Golden Palm on Saturday night with “Triangle of Sadness”, invited everyone on stage to a collective cry of joy. Just like the 48-year-old did when he received “the palm tree”, one of the most important film awards, in 2017.

“Almost the entire northern hemisphere”

At that time, Östlund (“Force Majeure”) succeeded in southern France with “The Square”, an art world satire. In “Triangle of Sadness” he leaves the super-rich stranded where you can’t buy anything – on a deserted island (theatrical release: autumn).

Graz director Marie Kreutzer (45) and her Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps (38) presented one of the films in the 75th Cannes edition not with money, but with real monarchy. In the Austrian cinema film “Corsage” (start: July 7), a contemporary-feminist approach to Empress Elisabeth in her 40s, Krieps (“Phantom Thread”) won the actress prize in the series “Un Certain Regard” (out of competition).

As far as sales of the film are concerned, “Corsage” seems to be well on the way to showing the world a different (film) face of “Sisi” than that of the great Romy Schneider. “Virtually the entire northern hemisphere”, as producer Alexander Glehr tells OÖN (more on the right), has secured the rights to “Corsage”. Central English-speaking cinema markets have struck: USA, Canada, Great Britain. Sales to China are being worked on. “An exclamation point” for the entire Austrian film industry was successful.

Such a set once again South Korea. Known as the father of the poor family in the Oscar hit “Parasite”, Song Kang-ho (55) won the palm for best actor in the family drama “Broker”. Exceptionally young, at 30, Lukas Dhont won the grand jury prize with the friendship drama “Close”. The Belgian shares the award with Claire Denis (76, “Stars at Noon”). The Paris director veteran called for a return to the cinema.
