The duo of singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have a knack for messing with every conceivable mix to update southern swamp rock, boogie, and vintage psychedelic soul into massive, award-winning hits. Grammys, platinum albums and a sales phenomenon on his tours. All this without losing an iota of the alternative spirit with which they began in the very distant indie scene of Ohio two decades ago. After the excellent but much more purist album dedicated exclusively to covers of old blues, “Delta Kream”, the Black Keys focused on returning to their original sound in this formidable “Dropout Boogie”. There are several guests, and the one who shines in full is Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top on “Good Love”, one of those songs that can be heard over and over again. But beyond the fact that this entire album is very good and even, there is a song that almost synthesizes the concept of the duo on its own: “Baby I’m Coming Home”, half sequel, half tribute, which manages to reinterpret what a song by cult like “Midnight Rider” by the Allman Brothers, to make it sound really current.
