Climate activist Greta Thunberg adorns the cover of the first issue of “Vogue Scandinavia” – and uses the opportunity to criticize the fashion industry. The young Swede posted a picture of the front page of the new Scandinavian offshoot of the fashion magazine on her social media channels on Sunday evening. On it she wears a kind of oversized trench coat and lovingly strokes a horse in a forest.
She also pointed out the problems associated with fast fashion on Twitter and Instagram. “The fashion industry is a major contributor to the climate and environmental emergency, not to mention its impact on the myriad workers and communities around the world exploited for some to enjoy fast fashion that many treat as disposable.”
Greta Thunberg demanded “System change” and sustainable consumption
Some in the industry tried to create costly campaigns to give the impression of being sustainable, climate-neutral and fair, wrote the 18-year-old. However, it is almost always pure greenwashing – measures with which companies want to give themselves a green image without actually doing anything for the climate and the environment. “The way the world is shaped today, fashion cannot be mass-produced or consumed ‘sustainably'”, so Thunberg. “That is one of the many reasons why we will need a system change.”
Thunberg told the magazine, among other things, that she hadn’t bought any new clothes for years. “The last time I bought something new was three years ago and it was secondhand. I just borrow things from people I know.”
Like the newspaper “Expressen” reported, the magazine itself wrote in a statement that Thunberg shares the magazine’s values on sustainable living and environmental protection. The clothes she is wearing in the pictures are made from sustainable, recycled material.
