An “Obi Wan Kenobi” at the height of tradition

An “Obi Wan Kenobi” at the height of tradition

The first episodes of this series in 6 chapters that takes up the dramatic adventures of the highest Jedi Master of the first trilogy, although they cannot be compared with a film production, much less with a masterpiece that revolutionized the Hollywood of its time. and that is still in force, they have moments that are at the height of the creation of George Lucas.

It would suffice to mention, spoiling as little as possible, a tense scene that culminates in a brutal attack in which a hand is cut off by the Jedi sword, and which refers to Kuroswa’s “Yojimbo” and reveals the cunning Lucas had in imagining those Jedi sabers. luminous that, unlike the katana of a samurai, do not shed blood when dismembering an enemy, since they work with heat and not with a metallic edge. This supports the idea of returning to the spirit of the first “Star Wars”, although the excellent previous series, “The Mandalorian”, also directed by the talented Deborah Chow, similarly encouraged the rhythm and drama in the action and suspense scenes. dramatic.

In the first three episodes not everything is the same; what is not so convincing is the way in which the dialogue scenes are shot, which sometimes look too televised: The contrast between a scene where Obi explains to little princess Leia that the galaxy is changing and he is her only support , since no army of her father could rescue her, it is excellent in writing, but it does not have the same visual as the rest of the series.

Then, there are two plot elements that end up resulting in a recommendable set even for those who are not a fan: the performance of Ewan Mc Gregor, who achieves an impossible mission such as being at the level of an Alec Guinness in “The bridge on the river Kwai” and “Lawrence of Arabia” by David Lean, a factor that gives meaning to the episodes of “Obi Wan Kenobi”. And then the surprising Moses Ingram -from “Lady’s Gambit”- who marks a milestone in the Star Wars universe by becoming the terrible, Kenobi-obsessed Inquisitor Reba, transforming her into an atypical and enormous villain of the streaming era.
