Cooper says he was in a dark place at the time, had “zero self-esteem” and was battling his demons. “He was so lost,” he said. “And I was addicted to cocaine, that was the other thing… I cut my Achilles tendon right after I got fired-cut-quit from Alias (series)”
Bateman noted that Cooper is now the antithesis of his former self: warm, considerate, and generous. Cooper attributes this aspect of his life to hitting rock bottom before he really achieved fame.
“I had the benefit of that happening when I was 29 years old,” Cooper explained. “I thought I made it when I got a Wendy’s commercial, and I called my dad to tell him I’m in a hotel that has a window that opens. Los Angeles for Alias, [me] I felt like I was back in high school: I couldn’t get into any clubs, no girl wanted to look at me. He was totally depressed. It wasn’t until The Hangover, I was 36 years old when I did The Hangover, so I had to go through all those things before fame played into my existence on a daily basis. So all of that happened before that.”
Arnett agreed with Cooper, saying, “You went through this metamorphosis before The Hangover. Having those realizations and having that change allowed you, that’s what opened you up and allowed you to be you.”
Cooper reiterated that the incident that caused this metamorphosis was courtesy of Arnett. “I definitely made big strides from 29 to 32, 33, 34 where I was able to at least stand in front of someone and breathe and listen and talk,” he reflected. “Will is the reason, he took a risk by having that tough conversation with me in July 2004, which put me on the path of deciding to change my life.”.
Since then, Cooper has garnered Academy Award nominations for his performance and accolades for his directorial work on his feature debut, A Star Is Born.
