“Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start: to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens,” de Armas recently told netflix-queue. “I wanted the world to experience what it really feels like to be not only Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. I found that she was the most daring, unapologetic, feminist version of her story that she had ever seen.”

“We worked on this movie for hours, every day for almost a year,” added de Armas. “I read Joyce’s novel, I studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, movies, everything I could get my hands on. Each scene is inspired by an existing photograph. We carefully examined every detail of the photo and discussed what was happening in it. The first question was always: ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible.”

The film’s mature rating reportedly created tension between Dominik and Netflixbut the filmmaker told ScreenDaily in February that he “has nothing but gratitude for Netflix,” noting that the streaming giant supported the title even if it had some issues with its content. Netflix “insisted” on bringing the editor of hereditary Y Tenet, Jennifer Licks, to “stop the excesses of the film”. Dominic added that “Blonde is a demanding film. If the public doesn’t like it, it’s the public’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”.

Speaking to Vulture in May, Dominik added of the film: “There’s something about it that offends everyone.”

Blonde premieres globally on Netflix on September 23.
