This is his first concept album: it tells the story of Ziggy Stardust, a bisexual alien with an androgynous image who becomes a rock star. An album that became essential within the glam rock movement, being its first single “Starman” the most popular song and one that would enter Bowie’s greatest hits. The album also contains hits like the song itself. “Ziggy Stardust”Y “Suffrage City”.
His concerts caused a great sensation, in which he changed his clothes several times and provocatively interpreted his role as an alien, at the risk of being booed, as happened at the beginning.
In July 1972 he was guest star of the television show of the BBC “Top of the Pops”. A phenomenally successful US tour followed. And as fast as it came, that alien disappeared from the face of the Earth. During a concert in London in July 1973, Bowie announced that Ziggy was no more.
According to his biographer David Buckley, “Bowie challenged the core of what rock music of the time was supposed to be” and “created possibly the largest cult following in popular culture.” It was his new alter ego Ziggy Stardust the one that catapulted him to stardom within the United Kingdom.
“He didn’t leave me alone for years, when everything started to turn sour… My whole person was affected. It turned into something dangerous. I really had doubts about my sanity,” Bowie went on to declare years later about Stardust.
