Gebhartl’s directorship is currently in its last few weeks (OÖN reported in detail, Silke Dörner will take over in September), so it’s time to take stock. And Gebhartl takes care of that together with the brilliant musician Gilbert Handler himself. One is, the other plays Gebhartl – one angry because of cultural-political upheavals, critics’ misunderstandings and other controversies, the other appreciating everything that has been achieved.
And how would everything have turned out if Gebhartl’s parents hadn’t put on a puppet show in Leonding every year for his children’s birthdays? The 65-year-old theater manager reminds of the nasty giant as his father’s hand puppet – there’s a guy lurking everywhere who gives a Haxl to those fighting for the beautiful, the good, the true. Along Handler’s musical bouquet, the lyrical and epic Gebhartl biography winds its way from elementary school in Doppl to the Zorro production as Dreikäsehoch to the guerrilla takeover of the old Phoenix cinema and the controversy with the organizers of the Capital of Culture Linz09, who recreated the Phoenix for practice wanted to send Africa – along with the heroism that followed. Handler’s outstanding voice straddles over three octaves without injury, both in Nicole’s “A Bit Peace” in the morbid tone and in the brilliant version of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus”. Bravo! (pg)
