The great German director Peter Fleischmann is dead. His family confirmed to the “Tagesspiegel” that the filmmaker died on Wednesday at the age of 84 as a result of a fall in a Potsdam hospital. Fleischmann was one of the most prominent representatives of the New German Cinema, as was Wim Wenders, 75, Werner Herzog, 78, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982). This film style shaped domestic productions in the 60s and 70s.
Fleischmann, who was born in Zweibrücken, was one of the pioneers of the modern German cinema scene. His best-known works include “Hunting Scenes from Lower Bavaria”, “The Hamburg Disease” or “Autumn of the Bums”. In the 1990s he successfully worked to save the film studios in Potsdam-Babelsberg and helped to thread the takeover by the French Vivendi group.

Fleischmann is a founding member of the German Film Academy and published his first novel “Die Zukunftsangst der Deutschen” in 2008. He made his last film with “My friend, the murderer” in 2006.
