The French film world mourns the loss of one of its famous actors: Jean-Louis Trintignant (1930-2022) has died at the age of 91. His family confirmed this to the AFP news agency on Friday (June 17). In his long career, the actor was involved in more than 160 film and theater projects and stood in front of the camera with Brigitte Bardot (87) and Romy Schneider (1938-1982).

Jean-Louis Xavier Trintignant was born in 1930 in the French municipality of Piolenc. With his younger brother, he grew up in a wealthy family in the town of Pont-Saint-Esprit, of which his father was mayor. Trintignant discovered his passion for poetry while still at school.

After graduating from high school, he quickly discarded the plan to study law and instead enrolled at the IDHEC film school in Paris. After numerous theatrical roles, he launched his film acting career in 1955 when he appeared in the short film “Pechiney.” 1956 followed a role in Christian-Jaques “TKX not answering”.

In the same year, Trintignant also gave the shy husband of Brigitte Bardot in “And always lures the woman”. A three-year military service then interrupted his acting career until 1959.

An impressive career in front of the camera

In the 1960s he continued his career in front of the camera, including with the film “A Man and a Woman” (1966), which received a sequel in 1986. In 1969 he was awarded best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in the political thriller “Z”. At the Berlinale he also received the actor award for his part in “The Liar”.

One of his most famous projects was the film “Das wilde Schaf” (1973), in which he starred with Jean-Pierre Cassel (1932-2007), Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin (75). From the 1990s onwards, Trintignant took fewer and fewer roles, but made exceptions for the films ‘Three Colors: Red’ (1994) and ‘Immortal – New York 2095: The Return of the Gods’ (2004). Most recently, the Frenchman was seen in the films “Love” (2012) and “Happy End” (2017) directed by Michael Haneke.

Two daughters lost

Privately, Trintignant had to cope with several heavy blows of fate. He was married three times in total. With his second wife he had three children together. One of her two daughters died of sudden infant death in 1970. His second daughter died in 2003 at the violent hand of her partner at the time.
