Pollution: Actor couple dives for ghost nets in front of Rügen

Abandoned nets in the waters are often deadly traps for fish and other marine life. A couple of actors takes action – and goes into hiding. For animal welfare.

The actor couple Tessa Mittelstaedt (47) and Matthias Komm (54) went diving for environmental and animal protection off the island of Rügen.

Her goal is to rescue abandoned nets – so-called ghost nets – from the Baltic Sea together with other divers. “I think this whole story makes a lot of sense. Every animal that gets tangled in one of the damn ghost nets is a lost soul, »Mittelstaedt said on the Saturday before the dive began. As a former assistant to Franzi in Cologne’s «Tatort», she is known to an audience of millions.

The action was organized by the Society for the Rescue of the Dolphins (GRD), which, according to project manager Verena Platt-Till, has also been involved in salvaging abandoned fishing nets in the Baltic Sea since 2019. Rescue operations are carried out regularly together with the Prora diving center.

Old nets or power supplies can be deadly traps for fish, porpoises, seals, or sea birds. In addition, they dissolve into tiny plastic fibers over time and pollute the oceans with microplastics. Often boats or ships run over gillnets in the Baltic Sea, so that parts are separated and then drift in the sea. Nets can also tear off during storms.
