Actress Selma Blair has been fighting the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis for three years. A documentary now shows how bad the 49-year-old was at times.
In October 2018, actress Selma Blair made public that she had multiple sclerosis (MS), an incurable autoimmune disease. Blair had received the diagnosis around two months earlier, after years of struggling with symptoms she couldn’t place. The American was tormented by neck pain, severe dizziness, difficulty walking and sudden loss of sensation in her leg. The certainty brought an MRI.
Since then, Blair has been very open about her illness, which causes her speech and movement disorders and occurs in episodes. On bad days she needs a cane to walk, and at times she could no longer climb the stairs of her house. In the meantime, she’s feeling better, a few weeks ago she shared a video on Instagram that even shows her riding. How much the 49-year-old suffered is shown in a documentary that describes her everyday life with the disease. Blair has now shared a first trailer on her Instagram account.
Her eight year old son shaved her bald head
In the clip, which is around two minutes long, the actress can be seen, among other things, during a stay in the hospital in Chicago. In June 2019, she underwent a stem cell transplant because medication did not provide relief. During the course of treatment, Blair received chemotherapy. The film shows her eight-year-old son Arthur shaving her bald head. “We’re shooting the last days of my life,” says Selma Blair in one scene. “I’ve been told to make plans about my death. Not because I have MS, but because I am battling MS.”
American director Rachel Fleit is responsible for the film. She herself suffers from the autoimmune disease alopecia universalis, in which all hair on the body falls out. Fleit told the US portal “Deadline” that they immediately found a connection through their illnesses. Eventually she was able to convince Blair to let the camera accompany her through her ordeal. “Introducing, Selma Blair”, the title of the film, will be shown in selected cinemas from October 15 and from October 21 on the streaming provider Discovery +.
