Whether the holiday takes place in the Balearic Islands or on the balcony: a tablet remains the perfect companion. Stiftung Warentest has taken 11 models to the chest and reveals which are really worthwhile.
Netflix on the plane and as a digital book in the park: With the combination of a large display and high mobility, tablets are the ideal device in summer for reading, browsing the web or watching your favorite series on the go. But not everyone is as convincing as the current test by Stiftung Warentest shows.
The testers compared eleven current tablets, nine of which are between 10 and 11 inches and two are particularly handy with 8 inches. In terms of price, the range is wide: the devices are between 100 and 600 euros. However, the price does not necessarily mean a much higher quality: Even the cheapest tablet is one of the six “good” ones in the test.
Expensive test winner
The most expensive model tested took first place: The the fourth generation convinced the testers the most. Above all in the sub-item “functions”, which includes areas such as Internet surfing, video watching or gaming, Apple’s 10.9-inch tablet runs away from the competition mercilessly. The display is also clearly the best in the test. Merchandise test only rated the battery performance as mediocre with 5 hours of surfing, almost 8 hours of video and 2.5 hours of charging time. The strong overall rating of “good” (2.0) can be paid for properly by Apple: The tested version with 64GB, WiFi and LTE costs 660 euros. But if you want to save some money, you can get the model without mobile communications for as little as 550 euros.
The competitors with Android are significantly cheaper. The second place of the models over 10 inches that , is hardly behind Apple with an overall rating of “good” (2.2), but costs less than half with a price of 220 euros or more. But you have to make a few minor compromises: In terms of functions, it does consistently a little worse than the expensive competitor, and it is hardly suitable for 3D games. After all, it can score with a similarly good display and long battery life: 7.5 hours of surfing and 12.5 hours of video were possible according to the product test.
It’s even cheaper . Without LTE it costs just 170 euros, the tested version with cellular network is available from 210 euros. However, no top performance is to be expected here either. The tablet is good for surfing and e-mails, videos are less fun, according to the product test. And this device is also overwhelmed with demanding games. The display is good though. Samsung could have added a shovel when it comes to the battery: After 6 hours of surfing or 7 hours of video, it’s over. The overall rating of “good” (2.5) is nevertheless noteworthy in view of the price.
Good little one
While the larger ones also have a few dropouts, both small tablets do well. But there are significant price differences: That At 450 euros, costs almost as much as the iPad – despite the significantly smaller display. Technically, the 8-inch device is convincing: It is the only tablet in the test that scores well in all sub-categories. The runtime is 5.5 or 11 hours. That is enough to catch up with the iPad with an overall rating of “good” (2.0).
The cheapest tablet in the test, the Lenovo, also knows how to convince – especially when it comes to the battery. With 10.5 hours of surfing and a whopping 15 hours of video, it lasts longer than all other devices in the test. The display is good too. Unfortunately, the innards can’t quite keep up: Surfing or watching videos are only possible with mediocre performance, and 3D games fail. The overall rating “good” (2.4) is strong in view of the price.
