Brad Pitt: After the split from Angelina Jolie, he cleaned up his life

Brad Pitt opens up more than ever in an interview. He talks about his addictions, the mental suffering he experienced and how he was able to grow from them despite the difficult times in his life.

How must it feel to be Brad Pitt? One of the most famous, most successful and one of the most attractive actors in the world. An interview with the British edition of the men’s magazine “GQ” gives insights into the inner life of the great Hollywood actor and they are far darker than one would have expected. But in addition to the dark side, which Brad Pitt also carries within himself, there is a very strong one, he speaks of experiences that have allowed him to mature.

The actor, who has been an integral part of many cinema films for over 30 years, has rarely spoken so openly and honestly. “GQ” writer Ottessa Moshfegh visited Pitt at his home on the Hollywood Hills. The result was an interview with confessions and insights from a 58-year-old man who, he says, didn’t always do everything right. Pitt begins the interview with thoughtful words about his life: “I’m in the last section, in the last semester or trimester. What should it look like? And how do I want to shape it?”

Brad Pitt: Two marriages and now alone in the Hollywood Hills

The Oscar winner has been married twice. His first marriage to Jennifer Aniston ended after five years. While filming the film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” he met Angelina Jolie. She is said to have been the reason for the separation, even if the couple never publicly commented on it. The attraction between the two could be felt through the screen. This was followed by his marriage to Jolie, with whom Pitt has six children. During the breakup, rumors surfaced that one of the reasons for the breakup was the actor’s alcohol consumption. Pitt admits to “GQ” that after the marriage ended, he joined the circle of “Alcoholics Anonymous”.

For a year and a half he went to the meetings regularly, he got to know a “cool group of men” that he described as very confidential. The actor admits that he was afraid to face other people with his illness, not least because of his enormous popularity: “I had noticed what had happened to other celebrities at such meetings, for example that they were filmed while they were in a meeting poured out their hearts. That would have been just horrible for me.” But he dared and with success, shortly after the divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2016, Pitt was dry.

During the pandemic, he also gave up his great passion, smoking. “I just can’t get through just one or two a day,” he honestly admits. But Pitt is more than the ex-smoker or the ex-drinker, also more than the beautiful Hollywood star. So he wears a tattoo that includes a romantic message: “There is a place beyond all notions of right and wrong. I will meet you there.”

Feeling pain and joy at the same time is growth for Pitt

“It’s a deeply romantic notion, but does it hint at a certain loneliness?” wonders the editor. Pitt replies, “I’ve always felt very lonely in my life. Growing up lonely as a kid, I live out here by myself, and it’s only recently that I’ve had a closer relationship with my friends and family. Pitt then tells the journalist about one Verse of a poem stuck in his head to describe his final years after the breakup: “I know a quote, it was either Rilke or Einstein, believe it or not, but it was about when you’re with the Being able to live the paradox, feeling real pain and real joy at the same time, that’s maturity, that’s growth.”
