“AEIOU”: Those who see with their hearts alone

Anyone who encounters love relationships with a large age difference will be challenged by the movie “AEIOU – The Fast Alphabet of Love”. In this work, for which the German also wrote the screenplay, director Nicolette Krebitz (“Wild”) brings together an actress over 50 with a young person.

Anna had to put her best professional days behind her. Adrian is a difficult fellow, an orphan. They get to know each other when Anna gives him speaking lessons in her Berlin apartment sponsored by her boyfriend Michel (Udo Kier). Before that, Adrian had stolen her handbag in front of a trendy bar… In this work, which ran in competition at this year’s Berlinale, Sophie Rois from Ottensheim can be seen as Anna, and the young German Milan Herms as Adrian.

value of the ephemeral

While Anna and Adrian are apparently decades apart, Rois and Herms have several things in common: Berlin is their place of work, they come from the theater – in the direction of Frank Castorf, for example, they were together on the Volksbühne. They enrich the film in a wonderful way with their knowledge of stage art about the direct presence, the artful storytelling with the smallest gestures, the value of fleeting moments. The duo, who get involved with each other searching, groping, crossing borders, become lovers like in dance. Krebitz knows how to embellish this game with images of urban life, sun-drenched architecture and romantic, symbolic motifs, as if one were imagining oneself in a Mediterranean town in summer. Kier’s almost mystical aura also contributes to this.

Despite any irritation, the film finds a light-footed language with which it creates a space in which more seems possible – even a look at love that is blind to questions of age.
