A magical fairy tale with captivating characters

For years, the Aist Festival in Pregarten has been delighting its loyal regular audience with professionally directed theater performed by amateur actors. As a unique selling point, the stage right next to the Aist is a trump card – which, however, could not be played out at the premiere of this year’s production – Ferdinand Raimund’s “The Waster” – due to bad weather. The hall in the Bruckmühle, on the other hand, is a means to an end.

Host Richard Maynau has “pregartized” the much-acted magic fairy tale about wealth and greed, good and evil as well as coldness and empathy as a director. There’s a brisk back-and-forth from the start, with the actors doing their best and in some cases that’s really good. This applies, for example, to Hubert Wögerbauer from the Engerwitzdorf theater group, who, as Valentin, brings a typical Raimund figure to the stage, lovingly splashes and his heart is in the right place. Alexandra Kloiber (Bruckmühle Pregarten) is very understandable as a cheerful Roserl and her joy in playing is infectious. Certainly the discovery of the evening. The four girls of the Valentin-Roserl couple are also very sweet and make you smile.

Karl Hofer as the narrator and “Holzweib” Herta Hemmelmayr would have given the author a lot of pleasure as characters. In general, some amateurishness could have been avoided with one or the other small directorial trick.
