A great musical big bang

A great musical big bang

With Joseph Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation”, the Kirch’klang Festival started its second year on Saturday in the Mondsee Basilica, which is all about exploring the history of sacred music in the Salzkammergut. So this festival breaks new ground. Because it is not primarily a musical idea that is at the center, but the impressive sacred buildings that offer the ideal atmosphere for a wide-ranging program from the early Middle Ages to the very latest piece.

In this way, Haydn’s vision of creation, which ranges from brilliantly exuberant praise of God and almost naive observation of nature to the urgent warning not to leave the path of salvation, unfolded its full effect in the magnificent room of the basilica. But that was also due to the extremely impressive implementation by the Vienna Academy and the chorus sine nomine, perfectly studied by Johannes Hiemetsberger, which inspired with accurate text clarity and sensational sound.

Inspiring soloists

The soloists were also enthusiastic. The Indian soprano Sherezade Panthaki, who effortlessly mastered all technical challenges, played clearly and expressively. The Polish tenor Jan Petryka, who grew up in Upper Austria, cleverly phrased the text and made ideal use of his wonderful lyrical voice. The same applies to the passionate interpreter Florian Boesch. The musicians of the Vienna Academy did a great job with the subtle details of the score and this is due to the accomplished and impulsive direction of Martin Haselböck. (wuss)
