With “Chapter I” the MUNTREF celebrates its 20 years

“Boltanski Buenos Aires” (2012) was MUNTREF’s first exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Art at the Hotel de Inmigrantes. It was followed by “No one is where they think they are”, by Graciela Sacco (2014), “Puerto de Memorias” (2016) by Leandro Erlich, “Sublevaciones” (2017), curated by Didí Huberman, “Pistoletto en Buenos Aires” ( 2019), the collective exhibition “After Babel and River Plate translations” (2021).

The list of national and international artists who have exhibited in its rooms is extensive, including Marcia Schwartz, Antonio Asís, Carlota Beltrame, Bernardí Roig, Anna Bella Geiger, Alí ​​Kazma, and among the curators invited to speak are Didí Huberman, Estrella de Diego, Manolo Borja. For Diana Wechsler, “MUNTREF is a crossroads space for training, research, development and transfers from different areas”.

The MUNTREF Collection – Chapter I, which is currently exhibited at the Hotel de Inmigrantes, is a plural and diverse collection of contemporary art works by artists of different origins and perspectives. The works of Leila Aloui (Morocco-France), Reza Aramesh, (Iran) Pierre Ardouin (France), Iván Argote (Colombia), Iván Grilo (Brazil), and the Argentines Clorindo Testa, Carlota Beltrame, Mariana Schapiro, Andrés Waissman, Graciela Sacco, Mariana Tellería and the group of randas, textile originating from Tucumán, extremely delicate needlepoint, embroidery, ñandutí presented by Alejandra Mizrahi.

In these 20 years the rooms became a center of attraction for the public, an important teaching task was developed, contributing to acquire other areas of cultural consumption in the Buenos Aires region. In addition to those mentioned, the memorable exhibitions of Grupo Espartaco, El ojo del río, Alejandro Puente, Quinquela Martín, Luis Seoane, Alberto Heredia and Carlos Gorriarena should not be forgotten. Electronic arts had a privileged space with the participation of Graciela Taquini and the chair bears the name of Norberto Griffa, a relevant member of Argentine culture, which has given rise to important video artists and their derivatives.

Another milestone is the creation of BienalSur, which was held for the first time in 2017. It includes works and projects selected as a result of open international calls, without pre-established themes. Since that first edition that covered 16 countries, 34 cities, 80 venues and 400 artists, the third, held in 2021, reached 24 countries, 40 cities and 120 venues and more than 600 artists, unfathomable figures but that can be contacted thanks to the technology.

Chapter II “Look, see, imagine” which will open soon at the Caseros headquarters with works by artists from various backgrounds, will be grouped into three micro-stories: in each of them, and among themselves, the tension between what we see, we know and we narrate.
