Herlufsholm: Danish royals take Prince Christian from scandal boarding school

It is considered one of the oldest schools in Denmark and has existed since 1565: Herlufsholm. But apparently the conditions in the private school are just as dilapidated as so many walls. This now has serious consequences for the boarding school.

After reports of abuses at the Danish boarding school Herlufsholm, Denmark’s royal family wants to withdraw from the school. Prince Christian (16), son of Crown Prince Frederik (54) and Crown Princess Mary (50), will leave school, and his sister will not go to school there as planned, the Danish broadcaster DR reported, citing a statement from the royal family.

Physical violence, bullying, abuse

In a documentary entitled “Herlufsholms hemmeligheder” (“The Secrets of Herlufsholm”) released in early May, the TV2 broadcaster revealed cases of physical violence, bullying and sexual abuse at the school. In it, several former students report hurtful experiences. Older students are said to have attacked the younger ones, especially at night, and beat them up, among other things.

After that, the headmaster of the boarding school was dismissed and comprehensive reforms were announced. This weekend, the entire board finally resigned, as the school announced on broadcaster DR.

The boarding school reacted to a new report by the Danish school supervisory authority, which sharply criticized the body and threatened sanctions. For example, it was suggested that the school should pay back its government grants. The school has until August 8 to respond to the authority’s proposals.

Royalty calls for cultural change

The royal family had previously reacted with open criticism. As Christian’s parents, one was deeply shocked to hear about systematic bullying and a culture of insults and violence at the educational institution, Frederik and Mary said in May. As parents, they expected the school to create a culture where everyone felt safe and part of the community. Now they are emphasizing the need for cultural change again.
