The short will be shot in English. Installed in El Deseo, the Madrid-based production company of the Almodóvar brothers, “Strange Way of Life” it begins with a man, Silva, riding a horse across a desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, the two men worked together as hired guns.
Silva arrives under the pretext of reuniting with his childhood friend. They celebrate their reunion. But the next morning, Sheriff Jake tells her that the real reason for his visit isn’t memories of his old friendship…
“I don’t say more because I don’t want to reveal all the surprises in the script,” he wrote. Pedro Almodovar in a statement issued this Tuesday by El Deseo.
The title of the film, he explained, echoes the title of a famous fado written and sung by Amalia Rodrigues. Its lyrics assert that there is no stranger existence than one that ignores one’s desires, which begs the question to what extent the film could revolve around desire, rather than the normal motifs of a western.
“In all of his films, Pedro reinterprets genres, questioning their codes,” said Agustín Almodóvar.
“Strange Way of Life” also stars the young promises Jason Fernandez, Jose Condessa, George Steane and Manu Riosin addition to Pedro Casablanc and Sara Salamo.
It will be shot in the desert of Tabernas in Almería, southern Spain, and also in the settlement that Sergio Leone built 50 years ago to shoot his spaghetti western trilogy “Dollars” with Clint Eastwood. El Deseo is also building a ranch near Madrid to shoot more scenes for the film.
Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent will oversee costume design and take associate producer credit.
“We will seek to self-finance and recover later. This is shot with the freedom we had when we made movies in Super 8 in the 70s, but with 40 years of experience in the sector”, said Agustín Almodóvar.
