Baz Luhrman to turn his film Australia into series

The project will be assembled entirely from footage shot by Luhrmann for Australia, with a new ending and an updated soundtrack. It is scheduled to premiere in the winter. (At the time of the Australian release, Luhrmann said that he had filmed three endings.)

“I originally set out to take the notion of the Gone With the Wind-style sweeping epic and turn it on its head: a way of using romance and epic drama to shed light on the roles of First Nations people and the painful scar on Australian ‘Stolen Generations’ history,” Luhrmann said in a statement. “While Australia has its own life, there was another telling of this story; one with different layers, nuances and even alternative plot twists that an episodic format has allowed us to explore. Drawn from the same material, Faraway Downs is a new twist on Australia for the public to discover.”

Just like the movie Faraway Downs will tell the story of an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), who inherits a large cattle ranch in Australia after her husband’s death. When Australian cattle barons conspire to seize land from her, she joins forces with a cattle herder (Hugh Jackman) to protect his ranch.

The story is explored through the eyes of young Nullah (Brandon Walters), a biracial indigenous Australian boy caught up in the government’s draconian racial policy now known as the “Stolen Generations”. The trio experience four years that will change their lives, a love story between Sarah and the muleteer, and the inevitable impact of World War II.

“Baz is one of the world’s greatest auteur filmmakers, so revisiting Faraway Downs and experiencing his incredible film Australia in this unique new episodic format has been an eye-opening and unique adventure,” he said. Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment. “We look forward to bringing viewers to the ranch and experiencing all of the stories that take place inside and continue to unfold there.”

The Australian theatrical cut runs for two hours and 45 minutes. It is not yet known how long the full six-episode series will last.
