Former pole vaulter Tim Lobinger is battling cancer again. Nevertheless, the 49-year-old was now able to attend his daughter’s wedding and lead her to the altar.
The former pole vault world champion Tim Lobinger has led his daughter Fee to the altar despite his cancer. “That day I was just the father of the bride, not Tim, who was suffering from cancer. That was incredibly good for me. Fee’s wedding was one of my goals in life. The fact that I was able to experience that gives me a lot of momentum and energy to keep fighting,” Lobinger told the magazine according to advance notice. He helped plan his daughter’s wedding from the hospital: “I stood between chemo stands and seriously ill people and talked to Fee about her wedding dress.”
Because of three corona infections during his chemotherapy, he was temporarily taken to the intensive care unit. But then his blood counts suddenly improved. The doctors gave him 20 hours to travel to Limburg for the church wedding. “As if God wanted me to walk my daughter down the aisle,” said the former professional athlete. “These positive emotions are my fuel. Sometimes my engine sputters or almost dies, but memories like this fill my tank again.” Lobinger was unable to attend the civil wedding a week earlier in Düsseldorf. “It didn’t work for me at all. My body was just too weak.”
Tim Lobinger fell ill with cancer again
The 27-year-old Fee Lobinger said in the interview: “The date was set relatively early, even before my father had this bad cancer recurrence. (…) We also split the wedding up and spread it over two weekends, so that the probability it’s bigger that dad can at least be there at one of the two celebrations. Luckily that’s how it happened.”
Tim Lobinger was diagnosed with blood cancer in March 2017. After chemotherapy, stem cell donations, intermittent relapses and a brief liver failure in the summer of 2018, the 49-year-old was considered cured. According to him, Lobinger had to undergo therapy again in 2020 and also received radiation. “In January 2021 there was a boost. That’s when the pain started to get worse,” he told the magazine “Bunte” in March of this year. Several visible tumors were removed.
