Barbra Streisand starred in the 1976 film “A Star Is Born”. Around 40 years later, the new edition appeared with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Streisand now criticized the 2018 version as unimaginative.
It was one of the most successful films of 2018, but singer Barbra Streisand harshly criticizes the new edition of “A Star Is Born”. The 79-year-old starred alongside Kris Kristofferson in the 1976 film of the same name. He played a successful rock star who struggled with drug and alcohol problems, Streisand gave a young musician who dreamed of a career of her own. The plot of the film is more or less identical to the remake of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Too identical in the eyes of Streisand.
“I was surprised when I saw how similar the film was to the version I made in 1976,” said the American now on the Australian talk show “The Project”. She would have wished for other actors and a different style of music. “When I heard the film was going to be reissued, it first said that Will Smith and Beyoncé would be in. I thought, this is interesting. To really do it differently again, with a different kind of music. I thought that was it a great idea.” The rock star variant with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, she could not get anything.
Barbra Streisand: “I think it was the wrong idea”
Streisand visited the two actors while filming on the set in Los Angeles. “She gave us her blessing. Everyone was so excited that she was there,” said Cooper at the time the US portal. And Lady Gaga added: “She was so, so nice.” But then Streisand found the finished film not very original. “I think it was the wrong idea,” said the actress.
But she also had to admit that the enormous success of the Cooper production was right. “A Star Is Born” received eight Academy Award nominations. Lady Gaga won – like Barbra Streisand in 1977 – the award for the best song. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga also received a Best Actor nomination. The 1976 film received nominations in only minor categories. “It was a great success, so I can’t argue with success. But I care more about originality than success,” said Streisand.
What she shouldn’t forget: her film was also just a remake. The original of “A Star Is Born” was released in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in the leading roles; the action took place in Hollywood. 1954 followed a new edition with Judy Garland. The 1976 Streisand and Kristofferson film took the action to the music industry.
