Master director Hans Hollmann died

The Grazer, who lives in Basel and whose seven-hour production of “The Last Days of Mankind” became legendary, directed well into old age and was still on stage himself.

His production of the “Last Days of Mankind”, which he created in 1974 for Basel and in 1980 for the Vienna Festival, “was definitely a highlight of my work”, said Hollmann.

In Vienna, for example, Hollmann directed “Hamlet” (with Klaus Maria Brandauer, 1985 at the Burgtheater), Raimund’s “Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind” (1990) and Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s “Der Turm” (1997). In 2010 he was Prince Saurau in Karl Baratta’s stage version of Thomas Bernhard’s “Verstör” on the stage of the Landestheater NÖ.

From 1977 Hollmann, who was awarded the Josef Kainz Medal and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st class, among other things, increasingly turned to music theatre.
