William Cohn: The legendary Böhmermann voice dies at the age of 65

An ugly sweater, striking glasses – and an unmistakable voice: William Cohn was loved by the audience for his appearances in the programs of Jan Böhmermann and Joko und Klaas. Now the actor, speaker and musician has died surprisingly.

His performances were legendary: when William Cohn appeared in the studio of “Neo Magazin Royale” in pullovers, some of which were enormously colourful, with very ugly patterns and wearing nerd glasses, the audience cheered. William Cohn passed away in Basel on Thursday, June 30, 2022.

His management confirmed this to several media. The cause of death is not yet known, Cohn’s death came as a surprise to “everyone,” T-Online quotes his management as saying. “Believe me, we too are stunned,” his manager Darlene Fischer told the portal. Cohn leaves “a big gap. With his family, his closest friends. In the local media landscape.”

Known from radio and television

Cohn was actually born Markus Kühne in Colombia. As a child, his family emigrated to Vienna. Austria shaped him, his accent and his sense of humor. Actually in the real estate industry, after his divorce, he decided to make his dream come true and studied singing and took acting lessons. He adopted his artist name during his studies in the USA.

The big career breakthrough came as a singer. Cohn became a TV and theater actor and speaker quite late. After announcing the guests from the off in “Roche & Böhmermann”, Cohn was best known to viewers for his deep, sonorous voice. In Böhmermann’s follow-up show “Neo Magazine Royale” he got what is probably his most famous role. As Böhmermann’s sidekick, Cohn was in almost every show, making for laughs with biting texts and strong punchlines. The fact that he was deliberately dressed poorly quickly made him a cult figure. This was followed by appearances at “Circus Halligalli” and numerous speaking roles in radio and commercials. From 2016, Cohn also dubbed the news anchor Kent Brockmann in the cult series “The Simpsons”.
