In May, the band announced that Tyler had entered a treatment center following a relapse after 10 years of sobriety. Tyler, 74, relapsed a little less than a month after aerosmith will kick off a series of concerts in Las Vegas.
The band said in a statement that Tyler had voluntarily entered a treatment program to “focus on his health and recovery.” Tyler reportedly relapsed after undergoing foot surgery to prepare for going on stage and the necessary pain management that came with the procedure.
The band canceled dates in June and July with plans to continue shows in September.
“As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years,” the statement begins. “After foot surgery to prepare for the stage and the need for pain control during the process, he recently relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program to focus on his health and recovery.
“We are very sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must cancel our first set of Las Vegas residency dates this June and July while he focuses on his well-being.”
“We will continue with our 2022 dates from September and will let you know of any updates as soon as we can.”, concluded the ad. “We are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows. Thank you for your understanding and for your support of Steven during this time.”
Tyler spoke on more than one occasion about his struggle to stay sober; from the first days of celebration aerosmith until his unsuccessful rehabilitation stints in the 1980s.
“I don’t think there are any bands that know what it’s like to be sober,” Tyler told GQ magazine in 2019. “I couldn’t do enough. I couldn’t get high enough.”
