Celebrating with the family: After a weekend trip to his vacation retreat Camp David, incumbent US President Joe Biden (79) returned to Washington DC on Monday (July 4) with his family just in time for the US Independence Day celebrations.
Late in the afternoon, the POTUS and First Lady Jill Biden, 71, initially hosted a military family cookout on the South Lawn of the White House. Then, at around 9 p.m. local time, the entire family gathered on the Truman Balcony to watch the fireworks on the National Promenade. Among them were son Robert Hunter (52) with his wife Melissa Cohen and their two-year-old son Beau. Joe Biden was casual in a shirt without a tie, Jill Biden wore a floral summer dress.

Shadowing the annual Fourth of July celebrations was an assassination attempt in a suburb of Chicago, killing at least six people and injuring others. “Jill and I are shocked by the senseless violence that has once again brought grief to an American community this Independence Day.” He was “grateful for the first responders and police officers on the ground” and would “not stop fighting the epidemic of gun violence”.
