Caan is also remembered for his role as writer Paul Sheldon in Misery where he shared poster with Katy Bateswinner of the Oscar for best actress, and for being Ed Deline in the tv series Las Vegas. During his extensive career he was nominated for Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes for his performances.

“Jimmy was one of the best,” said his representative today Matt DelPaino. “He Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, but he was also funny, loyal, caring and loving. Our relationship was always one of friendship before business. I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time.”

After a decade in the business, Caan rose to fame in the early 1970s with back-to-back feature roles. He earned an Emmy nomination as Brian Piccolo, the cancer-stricken running back for the Chicago Bears in real life, in Brian’s Song on ABC, opposite Billy Dee Williams as fellow Bears running back Gale Sayers. It was the most-watched television movie at the time in America, earning a 32.9/48 share rating, and won five Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Single Program – Drama or Comedy.

Caan followed that success with his best-known role: the brash and turbulent Sonny Corleone, the eldest son of Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), in The Godfather of Francis Ford Coppola. The film based on the bestseller by mario puzzo won the Oscar for Best Picture and is considered among the best films of all time, this participation earned him an Oscar nomination. Caan’s on-screen death amidst a hail of bullets is also considered one of the best in cinema.

Among the most popular roles of the last decades of Caan in cinema is elfthe 2003 Christmas movie starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, an orphan raised by elves at the North Pole who experiences culture shock and romance when he ventures to New York City to find his birth parents. Caan played Walter Hobbs, the father Buddy never knew who worked at a children’s book publisher in Manhattan.
