Victoria Ocampo’s house in Palermo was declared a National Historical Monument

The construction is inspired by multiple references to European avant-garde architecture, especially French, and was carried out in 1928 after the prominent patron hired the architect Alexander Bustillo for building: the final result was weighted by the French Le Corbusier during his visit to Argentina a year later.

The modern house caused a scandal in the authorities and the residents of the area, since it clashed with the surrounding French-style constructions. “They feared that such an outrage would spoil the nascent Palermo Chico for them. I was in love with the house,” the housing ideologue recalled years later.

In 1930, the foundation of the legendary literary magazine took place nearby Southone of the most important of his time and who knew how to publish writings of Jorge Luis Borges, Oliverio Girondo, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Ernesto Sábato, Juan Carlos Onetti, Leopoldo Marechal, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, William Faulkner, Aldous Huxley, Rabindranath Tagore, Alejandra Pizarnikamong others.

nine years later, Victoria Ocampo decided to move, after the death of his father, to the majestic mansion in Beccar, known as Villa Ocampo and which currently belongs to the UNESCO.

The modern house of Barrio Parque has a value that “exceeds the historical and biographical. Much more than a `memory site´, the place is a finished and almost unique testimony of a character with a privileged career, who embodied and translated into the environment environment that surrounded him the vital evolution in the culture of the 20th century”, highlighted the Government.

In 2003, the cement tycoon, Amalia Lacroze de Fortabatbought the house so that it became part of the National Endowment for the Arts (FNA)a body he has chaired since 1992.

Two years later, the building opened to the public as the FNA House of Culture, intended to offer a space for dissemination of local artistic productions.

Later, in 2016, a team of specialists in heritage preservation began a project and a restoration, refunctionalization and enhancement work to restore the original characteristics to all parts of the complex: garden, exterior and interior architecture, decoration , equipment and furniture.

The current revitalization project incorporates the function of residence for artists and writers into public cultural uses, seeking to relaunch the tradition of cultural hospitality inaugurated there by Victoria Ocampo.

Because of this impressive story, President Alberto Fernandez signed decree 380/2022, published this Friday in the Official Gazette, to declare the property a National Historic Monument.
