Robert DeNiro was part of The Godfather II as the young version of Vito Corleone and said about it: “I’m very, very sad to hear about Jimmy’s death”.

For your part Francis Ford Coppolawho first directed james caan in the 1969 feature film The Rain People and would meet three years later to The Godfatherrecalled his old friend in a statement published by the site Deadline.

“Jimmy was someone who has been in my life longer and closer than any movie figure I have ever met,” said Coppola.

“From those early days working together on The Rain People, and throughout all the milestones of my life, his movies and the many great roles he played will never be forgotten. He will always be my old friend from Sunnyside, my collaborator, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”
