Video games: Games center starts as an interface to industry

Digital applications from the games industry can be important in completely different parts of public life. The “Fusion Campus” advice center wants to build bridges to this end.

A new competence center is intended to advance Germany’s video game industry and serve as an interface to the classic industry.

The advice center called “Fusion Campus” is good news for game development and the creative industry in North Rhine-Westphalia, said Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) at the opening on Tuesday in Düsseldorf. It is an important day for digitization in Germany. “Games are an engine of innovation – there is no other industry in which creativity and technological know-how go hand in hand so much.” The state government is providing up to 750,000 euros for the construction.

This year it starts on a small scale, up to six jobs are to be created. According to founder Stefanie Waschk, there will be more in the coming years. “We build bridges between the gaming industry, other branches of the economy as well as science and the next generation,” said the expert. Other industries are advised on “how they can use gaming know-how in their business and benefit from it”. The center is paid for the advice, but in the long run it should be self-supporting.

As an example, the virtual reality application “Firefighter VR” from the Northdocks company from Monheim was demonstrated, in which the users are simulated burning houses and can practice firefighting hand movements and reactions. “Firefighter VR” can be played as a layman, and it is also used by fire departments to train their personnel. From the point of view of the Fusion Campus shareholder Waschk, the example shows well how digital applications from the games industry can be important in completely different parts of public life.

The competence center has its office in a building in which the German subsidiary of the French game company Ubisoft is based. Ubisoft Blue Byte, as the German subsidiary is called, is involved in the “Fusion Campus” as a partner. However, the campus is intended to be an interface to industry for the entire games industry. In addition, start-ups are to be promoted.
