“El Poeta”: all the voices come together in a musical tribute to Leonard Cohen

“An important step was understanding that ‘El Poeta’ was going to be in Spanish,” says Siperman. “There we started with Gustavo to translate songs that we always listen to in English, like ‘Bird on a wire’, ‘Sisters of Mercy’ or ‘Suzanne’. Then there was the most complicated part, which was attracting other artists to the project. To some with whom, for different reasons of friendship or work, we had on hand, we would ask what they thought of the idea, and when it occurred to us that this or that singer was perfect for this or that song but we did not know him in a way personal, we were locating it through social networks. Sometimes they would tell us yes at once, if they loved Leonard Cohen and were his fans, or in some other cases they would ask us to send them the song we had in mind for them to sing, they would listen to it, and in general they would sign up for the project. And that’s when we realized that the issue was bigger than we had originally anticipated. And although I like it a lot leonard cohen I have always recognized that I am not completely familiar with his discography, which is vast. It’s not like the Beatles, perhaps one of the only bands that one can know every album and every song. Cohen has a longer career and so we realized that there were many songs to choose from. That’s why we already have a first CD edited with the first ones we recorded and I think the project will last for at least one more album, if we don’t end up making three albums”.

A lot of work had to be done from theory to practice, as the keyboardist explains: “it’s not that easy to translate songs, much less for artists of such diverse styles, so we worked on the lyrics with Roca, and then we approached each artist for them to participate in the version of the song they had chosen: in some cases they adapted it themselves from the base that we proposed; for instance, Theresa Parody. We also thought that it would be difficult to get so many artists to rehearse for this presentation show. We assumed that we would have almost everyone only on the day of the concert at sound check, but we were very pleasantly surprised when we saw that more than 90 percent of the invited artists came to rehearse their theme.”

Something that draws attention is that being Siperman the keyboardist of the cadillacs there is no Cadillac involved in ‘The Poet’. “As I said before, the idea started in a rehearsal of the group just before the meeting in Luna Park, and at first we were going to involve several members of the band, but then I thought it was more sensible to separate the many from in such a way that we could attract musicians of different styles, which was a bit the original idea. Which does not mean that, given that the project continues, Cadillacs will not stop participating in the next volumes”.

It is impossible to talk to the keyboardist of hits like “Matador” without talking about the present of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs: “The pandemic hit us badly, like all musicians. To make matters worse, we had not played during 2019, and we had thought of a great comeback in Mexico in 2020 with nothing less than Madness, And that was suspended and could not be put back together, which was a great shame. It was a dream. This year we resume the concerts, very soon we will play in Mexico and the United States, and at the end of the year we will be in Chile. But what we don’t have scheduled for now are shows in Argentina.”
