In an interview, Cathy Hummels reports on how she overcame several depressions in her life and how she deals with it today.
In an interview with the magazine “Bunte”, Cathy Hummels (34) spoke openly about her experiences with depression and her dealings with the disease.
Hummels suffered from depression very early on, at the age of 15: “I was constantly sad, cried a lot, isolated myself and was more of an outsider at school.” For two years she had no friends at school and was bullied, “it was an incredibly difficult time,” said Hummels. She now knows that it is not normal to no longer see any meaning in life.
The worst time came at 24
However, she went through the worst depression of her life, including panic attacks, at the age of 24. At that time, she wanted “to do everything to have a happy marriage,” says Hummels. In 2015 she gave the yes word to soccer star Mats Hummels (33), in 2018 her son Ludwig was born. “I loved my husband very much and always wanted to take care of everything perfectly, but it didn’t go on like this.” Eventually she learned to put her needs first, after those of her son. “I couldn’t do that for a long time,” said Hummels.
She now has new courage and a lot of zest for life. “Today I’m fine, also thanks to professional support.” In addition to talk therapy, she also took antidepressants, says Hummels. Now sport, yoga, her work and consciously taking time for herself help her. Nevertheless, it is a daily challenge. “You have to take care of yourself, your body and your soul, and treat yourself with care to be happy.”
Seize the years of sadness
Now she uses Instagram, among other things, to break the taboo of the disease. She wants to “give a face to depression. This disease does not stop at fame, money or beauty. It can affect anyone”. She wants to use her years of sadness to encourage others. “This is my mission.”
