Boris Becker works in prison as a teaching assistant – the inmates are angry

Boris Becker has been in prison for financial crimes for a few weeks. The fact that he already has a job there causes resentment.

It’s a life that the tennis star still has to get used to: At the end of April, Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, and he’s been in jail for a few weeks now. Apparently the other inmates were critical of the fact that he was supposed to do a job there that matched his abilities.

This is reported by the British “Sun”. According to the newspaper, Becker will be employed as an assistant teacher at HM Prison Huntercombe, about 70 kilometers from London. He is supposed to explain the positive effects of physical exercise and healthy nutrition to his fellow inmates in physical education class. But he is probably not allowed to teach the practical part: As a newcomer, he does not yet have access to the fitness area.

resentment among fellow prisoners

Nevertheless, the new job is probably not well received by the other prisoners. The job of a teacher is seen as “convenient” and privileged. And for a newcomer to get it is unusual. “Normally you would have to be here for years to get a job as a teaching assistant,” complained one inmate, according to the newspaper. “But Becker received it just weeks after his sentence.”

Some relatives of prisoners have already written letters to the prison authorities to complain about the measure, which is perceived as preferential treatment. “It may not be the life of luxury that he is used to. But he has it better than most inmates,” the newspaper quoted a fellow inmate as saying.

The prison authorities denied any special treatment. “It is not true that there was any form of preferential treatment,” a spokesman for The Sun said. “Convicted offenders can accept a range of job and educational opportunities while incarcerated.

Becker hopes for extradition

The three-time Wimbledon winner was sentenced to prison in April because the court considered it proven that he had kept assets secret as part of bankruptcy proceedings. According to British media reports, Becker hopes to be extradited to Germany before the end of the year to serve out the remainder of his sentence. The possibilities of the open execution could enable a Christmas at home, the tennis star should hope.
