Emmys 2022: The contenders for the most important television award

The Netflix global success “Squid Game” and the HBO series “Succession” have been nominated several times and are treated as particularly promising. Both were also nominated in the royal category “Best Drama Series”.

Battle of the streaming giants

The streaming service HBO, together with HBO Max, has a total of 140 nominations this year – even more than Netflix. The main reason for this is the most-nominated series of the year “Succession” (to be seen on Sky), which is about a media mogul and his scheming heirs. The Netflix global success “Squid Game” is the first non-English language series to make history with its nomination in the main category.

Actors from both series also have hopes for an award – “Succession” clearly leads the field with a total of 25 nominations, including 14 nominations for acting performances in leading roles, supporting parts and guest appearances. “The teenage drama “Euphoria” (Sky) has 16 nominations, “Squid Game” has 14, as has the working world satire “Severance” (Apple TV+).

The other nominations for Best Drama Series are Better Call Saul, Ozark, Stranger Things (all three Netflix) and Yellowjackets (Sky). Last year’s winner “The Crown” (Netflix) cannot be selected this year because no new season had appeared.

“True stories” particularly popular

In the comedy categories, one of the favorites is “Abbott Elementary” (ABC), a warm-hearted series about the teachers at a Philadelphia public school. Last year’s winner, the football comedy “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+) and the Las Vegas tragic comedy “Hacks” about an aging comedian also have several nominations, each also as best comedy series. “Ted Lasso” has 20 nominations for its second season, making it the leader in those categories.

Obama nominated for “Best Narrator”.
