Floor Jansen is a musician through and through. In her private life, however, things are different: no music is made with her family at home.
Floor Jansen (41) is known to many only as the singer of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. With her participation in the TV show “Sing mein Song – Das Tauschkonzert” the Dutchwoman opened up completely new fans in the spring – and was therefore the surprise of this year’s season.
In her professional life, Floor Jansen is on the big stages of the world, delivers huge shows and inspires her fans. The singer is quieter privately: she lives with her family in Sweden, surrounded by many animals. There she finds the balance between work and private life: “I need enough time to be alone and in nature,” explains Jansen in an interview with spot on news. “Then I can recharge my batteries and am open to all impressions from the world around me.”
Living in Sweden keeps her “centered and balanced so I have the energy to do what I do,” she continues. “I stay healthy, awake and creative.”
Did your daughter Freja inherit the talent of her musical parents?
The singer has daughter Freja with Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl (32). Jansen “believes” that the five-year-old inherited her parents’ musical talent. “But I prefer to focus on the fact that she is a child and plays and is open to everything the world has to offer. Talent should only be explored when she is ready,” emphasizes the 41-year-old.
Although the singer and Hannes Van Dahl are both musicians, they don’t make music at home as a family: “No, not really,” says Jansen.
Solo career and Nightwish: does it go together?
Besides Nightwish, Floor Jansen is also pushing her solo career. In 2023 she wants to release her own album. Two singles, “Fire” and “Storm”, have already been released from it. “It’s neither metal nor rock, but pop music with different flavors. It will sound like me,” says Jansen about the long player. “The sound will be varied and full, where – compared to metal – less can be more. With room for my voice and many stories to tell.”
How does she balance her solo career and Nightwish? “With careful planning, but above all having fun with everything I do!” explains Jansen.
“Sing my song” was a “big challenge”
Both with her solo singles and her participation in “Sing mein Song”, Floor Jansen has proven that she can do more than just metal. Doesn’t she just want to be associated with the genre anymore? “I’m an artist first and foremost,” replies the 41-year-old. “One singer, one songwriter. The genre comes somewhere after those facts.”
Jansen wants to “reach people, regardless of the music genre”. “Sing my song” gave her “a unique opportunity to reach a lot more people than ever before, a chance to show people that there’s more to metal than most people know and that I’m not stuck in one genre and that too never did”.
Nevertheless, she was under a lot of pressure of expectations before the show: “The show is huge, so we all feel pressure because we want to do the best possible job,” she says. An additional pressure was for the Dutchwoman “that I’m not German and represent a completely different music genre”. Before the show, she knew “none” of her comrades-in-arms, not even their music. “So yeah, it was a big challenge,” admits the singer.
Her solo album is expected to be released in March 2023, and Floor Jansen will then be touring through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland from April to May.
