The Ria Deseado, a Vernesian experience in Patagonia

The Ria Deseado, a Vernesian experience in Patagonia

LIKE A “MYSTERIOUS ISLAND”, A PLACE WHERE NATURE SURPRISES

Traveling the almost 50 km long of the Ria Deseado is a unique opportunity to surrender to a natural environment, practically without human modification, to be surprised. Whether you visit on foot, by bicycle or by boat, each step is a call to the senses: the view is the first to be benefited by the particularity of the environment that combines the blue of the sea with different shades of yellow, among soft and strong, due to the action of the lichens on the volcanic rocks with reddish tones.

The activity of the species of fauna that settles there, either temporarily or for reproduction, is also perceptible with smell and hearing, in addition to offering unique spectacles due to the behavior of the different animals that can be seen there: birds fly over the coasts looking for food, the sea lions of a hair, stars of the Provincial Reserve, come out of the water in search of the sun… Sometimes it is possible to see male specimens, of up to 400 kilograms, climb on their fins up to 15 meters high, or the females making fantastic dives.

The canyons, product of the natural erosion of the plateau, expose the geomorphological product of millions of years, until the Jurassic period. All of this causes the individual to go beyond his role as a spectator and feel sheltered, integrated, as one more element of the landscape, as he advances like a filmmaker who collects everything that surrounds him, making the lens of his camera not a wall, but a portal.

BUILD A UNIQUE STORY, EXPLORE

Part of the richness of the Ría Deseado Provincial Reserve lies in the many ways in which it can be visited, each of them promoting a particular way of exploring it and therefore of getting to know it.

On solid ground it is possible to border its course and contemplate it from the height. The intense blue that at times runs into a purple, is the constant background frame… The canyons with their capricious shapes invite you not to stop the course. During the crossing, the flora and fauna of the place is presented openly: the typical bushes of the Patagonian plateau complement the rest of the environment, providing more diversity in the shades of yellowish tints… Species of fauna may appear behind them… On the coasts, and even very close to the town of Puerto Deseado, there are 4 species of cormorants. This favors a highly attractive activity in the destination: bird watching, which provide a visual spectacle of great richness, but also sound, since each of them has special ways of communicating that vary according to the situation.

What medium to use? Since the estuary is very close from the center of Puerto Deseado, there are two most common ways: on foot or by car. However, little by little, other options are emerging, even offered by tour operators and/or providers, as in the case of cycling tourism. Touring it by bicycle, either for a while or for a whole day, guarantees an unforgettable experience, crossing rocky bottoms and banks of mud and gravel. The diversity of trails provides alternatives that adjust to the needs and motivations of the groups, with different levels of difficulty.

But the region’s own climate, with low rainfall and strong winds, favors nautical activities and visits by boat. Touring the estuary, guarded by specimens of marine fauna, while visiting the islands within it, provides a highly valuable approach to the biodiversity protected by the Provincial Reserve, allowing an approach to the colonies of Magellanic penguins, sea lions of a hair and a wide range of species that complement the experience. Doing it in Kayak is one of the options of particular richness that offers the possibility of contemplating unique sunsets while enjoying the characteristics that occur with the behavior of the tide; when it goes down, multiple subtidal forests come into view.

ONE PLACE, MULTIPLE ATTRACTIONS

The Ría Deseado Provincial Reserve synthesizes a vast value associated with nature. On its way, which extends from the Giménez canyon and culminates in the sector called Paso Marsicano, embraced by large cliffs and sinuous elevations that become increasingly timid towards the town of Puerto Deseado.

Throughout the estuary, the landscape is the predominant element, combining its properties with the living conditions of the fauna that inhabits it and the particularities of the environment evident in its flora. Going through it is an invitation to explore a natural environment in its broadest purity, penetrating little-visited corners and discovering in them what they have to tell. No matter the age or how it is done, the Ria Deseado is always predisposed to be discovered, showing, each time, something new to the visitor’s senses that impacts and delights to improve the state of well-being.
