It is a role for which you first have to have the self-irony and the will to reflect in order to be able to fill it out successfully: Monsieur Claude Verneuil is an arch-conservative Frenchman, a European film character who made himself available as a relevant projection screen before they were publicly named: that of the much scolded “old white man”. The French actor Christian Clavier can be seen for the third time as Monsieur Claude in the film “Monsieur Claude and his big party”. The 70-year-old shows that he only warmed up in the first films.
One party, ten in-laws
This is also made possible by its new, expanded environment. Under regular director Philippe de Chauveron, the (pseudo)author-turned-patriarch is treated to the multiculturalism of all his four daughters’ parents-in-law. The occasion is the 40th wedding anniversary with Marie, the great Chantal Lauby. Five couples meet, ten parents with “purely” French, Chinese, African, Arabic and Israeli roots – complemented by a behaviorally creative German art dealer.
This brilliant, mature ensemble holds up a mirror to Europe in a special way in crazy mini-wars, with inflated sensitivities and prejudices – you laugh out loud because so much is so true. Here and there you could have slowed down a bit. But Monsieur Claude never does either. (nb)
