Back then no handkerchief stayed dry: 20 years ago Mette-Marit and Haakon got married

The Norwegian Crown Prince couple Mette-Marit and Haakon are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. On August 25, 2001, the heir to the throne and the commoners said yes in Oslo Cathedral. To this day it is one of the most unusual weddings that ever took place in the European aristocracy.

Because Mette-Marit brought an illegitimate son into the marriage, the then four-year-old Marius. In addition, the 28-year-old bride had to justify her past as a party girl. But Crown Prince Haakon fought for his love – and prevailed. In 2004 the couple’s daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, was born. Son Sverre Magnus followed a year later.

The couple now spends their wedding day differently than planned. Actually, Mette-Marit and Haakon wanted to keep different appointments. Among other things, a meeting with young people was on the program to commemorate the founding of their fund 20 years ago. But Princess Ingrid Alexandra was infected with the corona virus. The whole family now remains in domestic isolation at Gut Skaugum and will toast the anniversary there.
