As a consequence of the pandemic, the Chancellor candidate of the Greens wants to introduce a new model to calculate Germany’s prosperity. “What exactly is prosperity?”she asks in the current episode of stern-Podcasts “Die Boss”. The previous indicator for economic output, the gross domestic product (GDP), could not provide an answer. “An economic indicator that does not recognize that we are stuck in a climate crisis (…) and in a justice crisis is obviously not the right yardstick to measure the well-being of a society”says Baerbock. The Greens propose, for example, to include investments in education and the state of social cohesion.

The controversial debate about economic indicators such as GDP has been simmering nationally and internationally for years. Baerbock wants to push them harder after the pandemic. One must ask oneself: “What can we do better if we are already taking so much money into our hands and saying we have to get the economy going again?”

How does a climate-friendly economy work?

In an interview with podcast host Simone Menne, she defends herself against the image that her party’s ideas for a climate-friendly restructuring of the economy are naive. You want “show that there is another way”says Baerbock. So far, too little has been done at federal level: “Everyone is for climate protection, but specifically, nobody is doing it.” As a positive example, she cites the government of the Greens Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann in Baden-Württemberg, where, for example, it has been possible to quickly expand the charging station network for electromobility. However, Kretschmann is repeatedly criticized within the party for his business-friendly course.

Annalena Baerbock, 40, is the first candidate for Chancellor in the history of the Greens, who, according to current polls, could become the second largest party in the federal election in September. In the podcast, Baerbock reports that as the mother of two small children, both as a member of the Bundestag and as a candidate for chancellor, she has had to work against many reservations as to whether she can combine work and family since 2013. She found her way into politics by chance through an internship with a member of the European Parliament for the Greens, says Baerbock. Her dream job was actually a war reporter.
