Mitchell’s public appearances dwindled after the artist suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 that left her temporarily unable to speak and the aftermath required extensive physical therapy.

Mitchell and Carlile sang the 78-year-old’s “A Case of You” and “Both Sides Now” as a duet, while the Canadian-born folk icon delighted the crowd with the lengthy solo of “Just Like This Train.” with an electric guitar.

The 13-song set also included his classic green anthem “Big Yellow Taxi” and “The Circle Game” in addition to “Summertime,” “Love Potion No. 9” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love.”

The groundbreaking singer-songwriter was honored earlier this year as MusiCares Person of the Year at the benefit gala preceding the Grammys, where she gave a brief performance.

The next night, she accepted the Grammy for Best Historical Album, dressed in a red leather beret, sunglasses, flowered pants, and with her blonde hair loose in pigtails.

Icon

Born in a small town in western Canada, Mitchell started out playing in small clubs until moving to Los Angeles, where he became a seminal figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene of the ’60s.

She is considered one of the most emblematic singer-songwriters of her generation who gave rise to the phenomenon of the lonely and thoughtful musician who exudes emotions on stage.

Last summer, her seminal album “Blue” topped the iTunes chart at number one on its 50th anniversary, beating even pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour.”

Showing his own amazement at the milestone on the MusiCares red carpet, Mitchell earlier this year explained his album’s enduring popularity and recent resurgence: “Maybe people want to dig a little deeper.”
