Luckily, halfway through the series, things change, especially towards the end of the fourth chapter and in the unmissable fifth part, a masterpiece in itself that would even shine when seen in isolation from the rest of the set. The fact is that “La pupe” is like a perfect mix between Darío Argento and Costa Gavras, and also integrates well the life of Eva at the end of her career as an actress (a great moment is when she asks them to destroy the negative of her film “La prodigal” by Mario Soffici) while the character intensely embodied by Ernesto Alterio, a colonel in charge of necrophiliac incidents, hides the corpse behind a cinema screen (which allows welcome winks to appear among film buffs, such as the appearance of Olga Zubarry and Nathan Pinzon); In addition, it takes full advantage of the action of 1971, with the investigations of the journalist who works as the alter ego of Tomás Eloy Martínez (a solid Diego Velázquez).
From “La pupe”, “Santa Evita” does not lower its level of excellence: it catches as a series of this footage should do, with remarkable sequences of the colonel’s delusions at the time of revealing those unspeakable secrets in which everything was involved. the military High Command for nearly two decades. The ending does not fail to intertwine all the periods and subplots correctly, without failing to save the climax of Oreiro’s performance (it is also worth mentioning the unsquandered story of the female vote).
“Santa Evita” intersperses sequences that take place from the 30s, 40s and up to 1971 -the “present” of the story- and so that this coming and going does not completely make you dizzy, the setting of each era is essential; For this reason, supported by the excellent photography of Chango Monti (he shines in moments bordering on the supernatural), both Beatriz Di Benedetto’s wardrobe and Mercedes Alfonsín’s art direction work well for this purpose. And the excellent documentary footage and photographs aid historical understanding.
“Santa Evita”, even with its imperfections, is among the best that has been done for streaming from Argentina, and this is also due to the work of producer Salma Hayek.
“Santa Evita” (Argentina, USA, 2022). Dir.: R. García and A. Maci. Int.: N. Oreiro, E. Alterio, D. Velázquez (Star+).
