Computer: New Intel chip for data centers will not be available until 2022

With the new processor with the code name “Sapphire Rapids” there are delays. A manager of the US semiconductor manufacturer gives the reasons in a blog.

At the semiconductor giant Intel, another important chip is coming onto the market later than originally planned. This time it’s about the lucrative business with data centers, in which Intel is increasingly facing competition.

The production of the new processor with the code name “Sapphire Rapids” should now start in the first quarter of 2022 and be ramped up in the quarter following, wrote the responsible manager Lisa Spelman in a blog entry on Wednesday night. “Sapphire Rapids” was originally announced for this year.

The additional time is necessary in view of the depth of the innovations in the processor generation, argued Spelman and referred to two acceleration technologies, among other things.

The group had recently already struggled with delays in the start of production of a new processor technology. In the summer of last year, Intel had to announce that new processors with structure widths of 7 nanometers will be delayed further and will not come onto the market until the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. The reason is an error in the production process that led to an excessive proportion of unusable chips. The problem has been discovered and will be fixed, it said.

The data center business made up a good quarter of Intel’s sales in the past quarter. Especially the smaller arch-rival AMD was able to significantly expand its market share thanks to new processors. In addition, the graphics card specialist Nvidia, which is strong in the business with computing power for artificial intelligence, also announced the entry into the market for server processors.

During the corona pandemic, the need for technology for data centers grew strongly with the increased use of video conferences and streaming services. At the same time, Intel recently recorded a weakening in the business and explained this with the fact that the market has now to digest the growth of the past few months.
